Episode 8: The Long Goodbye - Films That Shocked Us

Steve and I compiled a list of films that are truly disturbing or have at least one shocking moment. We tried to make our selections unpredictable and not obvious. One of Steve's picks nearly cost him his relationship! Tune in if you dare... Give us your most shocking movie picks via Twitter: @andrewlapo (Andrew) and @kieswetter (Steve) or in the comments section below.

  1. I decided to post my comment here, 'cause I'm awesome that way.
I've got a few examples of "shock," taken however it made sense at the time of writing.

#1: I recently watched Limitless, starring Bradley Cooper. While the film itself was decent enough, there was a scene at the end that involves one "Did he just do what I think he did?" moment and one shot of surprise violence. It's not that it's ultraviolent or anything, but it's one of those shots that seems so out of place in such a non-violent flick.

#2. Happiness. There's not much more to add. I think it was the first film I saw that dealt with dysfunctional families in a way that I had never seen before.

#3. Daisy (Director's Cut), a film by the director of the Infernal Affairs trilogy. What I found shocking about this film wasn't any particular scene, but rather how it builds up as one type of film, then takes a sudden left-turn into something completely different. I had an idea of what that meant when I first saw it, but I was still genuinely shocked when that turn happened. I highly recommend avoiding the IMdB page, or looking too closely at the DVD art. Just watch it "blind" so to speak. It will not disappoint.

    Participation points go to:
    Full Metal Jacket
    Sunshine
Natural Born Killers (I still fastforward through one scene I find uncomfortable)
    Requiem for a Dream
    Tideland
    Battle Royale
    and many more.

Side-note: If you guys are having Skype issues, there are a couple things you can try. I don't know if you use video while Skyping (even though you only record audio), but you can try turning video off. It'll save on bandwidth. Second, you could try Google+ Hangouts on Air. I haven't used it myself, but I've heard that it's pretty solid. It'll record video directly to YouTube. You don't have to broadcast live, but it allows you to if you are so inclined. My third suggestion is to do a quick test on speedtest.net and check what your Upload speeds are. If they're less than 2 mbps in either of your locations, that could be part of the problem.

Great show! Keep up the good work!

  2. Thanks for listening and commenting Dan! I appreciate the Skype tips too. It's often a frustrating process for us.

  3. That story about Salo is fantastic! Reminded me of a first date in which we watched Your Friends and Neighbours. Yeah, that relationship didn't last long. Surprised neither of you mentioned Neil Labute, who I've found to be pretty consistently shocking.

    Great stuff!
